i am still going through old photos when i find a few minutes of free time, and i just came across these from last year's county fair. we'd never been before so this was a first for us all. mateo loved the train ride and train room and fried yummies, ruby loved the lights and live animals, and luke and i geeked out on the food and arts and crafts exhibits. luke also joined the homebrewers club and did some judging while i took the kids for a walk.
if i am remembering correctly, i thought he would be into the quesadilla but really he wanted more of the fried potato thing on a stick in the first photo.

county fair family photo 2012. we hope to go this year if we are not "baby-having" (a term we read in an old pregnancy book that makes us laugh).
at some point when luke was finished judging, we went back to the ridearea and mateo was so excited to show luke his favorite one (the swings - the big ones, not the kids swings), he ran through the crowd and we lost him! the only time i've lost him before was in kohls when he disappeared to the women's underwear section and was found blowing bubbles and watching himself in the mirror. this time was way scarier - i had my eyes on him and in an instant he ran between two women's skirts and was gone. i ran after him, straight to the swings, back around, and all over, in the midst of mega crowds and loud noise and lights. i'm sure just a few minutes passed but it felt like forever. people could see and hear my panic and began to help look. soon i found him far from where i'd expected, in the arms of a police officer. so, best ending possible, but one of the scariest moments for me. that boy.
after we all calmed down we let him choose one ride for the day and he chose the kid's swings of course. he was so nervous having never been on a ride and going solo, but so excited. his expression makes me smile.
