valentines

we had fun  valentines day.  we went out to breakfast as a family, i heart-attacked the tree outside mateo & ruby's window (they were super into it), and we rushed to the valentines day story time at the library.  the librarian asked the kids "what do people say on valentine's day?" and mateo answered "i love you!".

we never celebrated much before, but mateo is so, so fun now when it comes to holidays which makes them way more fun for us too.  he was really excited for this day, and i'd told him valentine's day is a day where we tell our family and friends we love them, and sometimes we give them special cards and treats.

somehow mateo's excitement plus me seeing a recipe for homemade ice cream cookies birthed an idea for a little valentines day party, so after the library story time we walked with his little friends (and our big friends) up the hill to our house to have lunch together.  luke came home to man the griddle and made a million tiny grilled cheese triangles and i made homemade tomato soup, and we had veggies and luke's ranch and ice cream and cookies for dessert.  the little ones played and exchanged little valentines, valentines that ruby and mateo have been carrying around with them ever since.  it was a happy day full of love.

(and we forgot to take our annual valentines day photograph, until it was too late and dark.  these are the best we got.  i like the last one, with unica and mateo's "heart" face.)
