from pagosa springs, we drove to durango, where the big event was a train ride to silverton. my parents took me when i was little and we were excited to take mateo (who is a mega train man this year) for his birthday.
early may is the last bit of off season, so tickets were cheaper and the train was fairly empty, both good things for us.
mateo was in awe the first bit of the day. we'd really talked it up and he'd never been on a train. we got tickets for the open air car which we really loved.
ruby liked it too!
cool guys on a train
the trip was so beautiful, winding up into the mountains and next to the river and because it was spring the snowmelt created waterfalls and the train rocked the babies to sleep.
after a few hours we saw the craggy peaks of silverton.
we really loved the town - super tiny and a little artsy and completely surrounded by peaks. it is at 9,000 feet so it made us a little tired and the air was amazingly clear.
the silverton brewery for lunch is a very good idea.
after lunch we walked around the town looking at old houses and imagining life so high on a mountain, so far away from everything, with only 500 other people around. and we got ice cream. then we got back on the train and slept our way back to durango.
