sedona for my birthday, part 1

it has taken me a few months share some of my favorite things about this spring and summer - boston, new mexico,  colorado and my birthday.  for the sake of recording, i am going to try to go through the best of the best this week.  so i will start with my 30th birthday which we spent in sedona.

luke gave me the gift of spending my birthday somewhere out of town and even though it is right down the mountain and we've been there so many times before, sedona kept popping into my mind.  we've never stayed the weekend there since we usually go for day hikes and come back up, so we made it happen.  we pricelined a hotel and got a cheapie days inn next to bell rock.  at first we were semi-bummed that priceline didn't surprise us with something nicer, but in the end we were so happy to have a kid-friendly place with a pool and a view of bell rock.

we drove down in the afternoon and headed straight for the iconic red rock crossing park for a picnic.  we loved it there.  it was cloudy and overcast so the red rocks were glowing.  we hiked back through the park along the river and found hundreds and hundreds of cairns - in the trees, on the path, in the water.  it is such a special place.

for dinner we went to el elote - the restaurant that everyone talks about, the restaurant that you have to get to an hour before it opens if you want to eat that evening.

the food was pretty amazing and we went crazy and ate too much and then on top of that got one of my favorite desserts and coffee at the end of the meal.

later we headed back to the hotel and opened cards and gifts.  my mama had sent a dutch oven (!) that was wrapped so well i couldn't open it, mateo couldn't open it, and luke spent 20 minutes opening in between all of our laughter.
