luke and i took some time on a recent sunday afternoon to once again visit the massive Babies'R'Us store in lansing. we've been once before and we were both a bit lost and confused about everything that is being sold and everything they say you "need". we definitely want to be simple and minimal and avoid buying into all the commercial-ness. but we also want to be smart and buy what really does work.
does anyone have any advice on what we really should or shouldn't get?
anyways, we went this time to begin our baby registry. apparently there are a few baby showers being planned for us (!) and we've been asked a few times where we are registered. so we did a little research ahead of time, printed off a few checklists, and went to lunch to get the much needed energy for the afternoon as well as hash out the what-we-need vs. what-we-don't-need on the checklist.
from there we headed to BRU and pretty quickly became lost and confused (again) under the harsh florescent lights. aisles and aisles of one item in different versions and brands and prices. we noticed how the other people registering had brought real moms to help them decide what bottles/baths/strollers/etc were best... that would have been a good idea.
despite our frequent breaks to the restroom or to catch our breath in the rocking chairs, despite the stress of our cluelessness about what baby things are best, we did have a lot of fun picking out stuff for our little one. i handled the checklist while luke (of course) handled the laser gun. in the end, i think we were there a total of 3-4 hours.
and for now... it is complete. and can be found here, under plonsky.

I should blog about our experience, too! We went last weekend and stayed about the same amount of time as you and Luke. I was so exhausted and we didn't even finish. It got to a point I was so overwhelmed I would just ask a sales person which item I should register for! Oh, I looked at your registry and I didn't see that you registered for a swing. I don't know what you've heard about them, but a few people have told me they are a must have.
ReplyDeleteYes, that store is very overwhelming for sure! It looks like you guys got all the essentials on your registry though...good work! I think you'll love those sleep sacks, they are great! Also, Corbie's binkie of choice was the Nuk...good shape and come in cute colors! How fun!!!
ReplyDeleteHEY YOU THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT YOU NEED BUT I FOUND IT BEST TO GET SOME STUFF AFTER THE BABY IS BORN LIKE A SWING WE GOT THIS ONE BY GRACO THAT MOVES WITH NATURAL MOVEMENT THAT THE MOTHER WOULD HAVE ROCKING THE BABY. KEAN HATED EVERY MOMENT IN THE SWING, WASTED 200 FOR THE SWING. WE REGISTERED FOR THE AVENT PACIFIERS, HE ONLY LIKE THE GREEN ONES THAT THEY HAVE IN THE HOSPITAL (I FORGOT THE NAME) BUT WE HAVE LIKE 12 PACIFIERS NOW THAT WERE NEVER USED. I GOT A BOPPY BUT NEVER USED IT. HOWEVER A BASINET IS AWESOME FOR WHEN YOU HAVE THE BABY ON YOUR ROOM AND THE CRIBS THAT ARE 3 IN 1 ARE THE BEST WAY TO GO FINANCIALLY, OURS WAS A GIFT AND WASNT THAT ONE NOW WE HAVE TO BUY A NEW BED FOR HIM WHICH SUCKS. BUT YOU WILL KNOW A LOT OF WHAT YOU NEED AFTER THE BABY COMES ( LIKE THE SMALL STUFF). BUT THE BEST GIFT EVER WAS THE TRAVEL SYSTEM, IT REALLY MAKES LIFE EASIER. OH AND GO EASY ON THE TOYS KEAN LIKES DVD'S AND SHOES, WHAT A WASTE OF SPACE AND MONEY IN MY FRONT ROOM. I LOVE YOU PAM AND CALL ME IF YOU HASVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS
